The site was occupied by a Native American Mississippian culture settlement during the Late Woodland period, between the 10th and 13th centuries CE. The Aztalan settlement was surrounded by a palisade and consisted of several earthen mounds, the largest of which was used as a platform for a temple or chief’s house. The site was abandoned by the Aztalan people around 1300 CE, and it is currently maintained as a state park.
