Graniteville is a hamlet located in the town of Willsboro in Essex County, New York. The hamlet is situated on the east branch of the Ausable River. Graniteville was founded in 1793 and was originally known as “The Forks” because of its location at the confluence of the east and west branches of the river. The hamlet’s name was changed to Graniteville in 1827 because of the large deposit of granite in the area. The hamlet’s economy was historically based on agriculture and lumbering, but today it is primarily a bedroom community for the nearby city of Plattsburgh.
