Republic County is a county located in north-central Kansas, in the Central United States. As of the 2010 census, the county’s population was 5,839. The county seat and largest city is Belleville. The county was created on February 26, 1855, and was originally named Richardson County, after William A. Richardson, the first governor of the Nebraska Territory. On February 10, 1867, the county was renamed Republic County to reflect the county’s support for the Union during the American Civil War.
