Cushing is a city in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census, a decline of 6.5 percent from 8,371 at the 2000 census. Cushing was established in 1891 with the discovery of oil in the area, and was named for Marshall Cushing, a surveyor for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The city became a transportation hub for the region, with multiple railroads and highways passing through it. The discovery of more oilfields in the area in the early 20th century led to a boom in the city’s population and economy. Cushing is home to a large oil storage facility, which is the largest in the United States.
